Parrillas en Recoleta: dónde comer un gran asado a pasos del Alvear Published on 19/08/2026 by Carlos

Steaklesses in Recoleta: where to eat a great asado steps away from the Alvear

Here at alturas, we’re well aware that Recoleta isn’t Palermo, as you won’t find the same concentration of steakhouses here as you do on Guatemala or Honduras streets, nor will you find those blocks in the Soho neighbourhood packed with tourists queuing up for a table at a restaurant. However, the neighbourhood has its own culinary character.

In this area, the ritual of meat is experienced differently; whether in a five-star hotel restaurant, a classic tavern with old-school waiters, or some avant-garde spot that passes completely unnoticed from the pavement.

But what really saves the day is the location. I mean, if you stay at the Alvear Palace, the Four Seasons or one of the boutique hotels nearby, you've got the best steakhouses in the city no more than a 15-minute walk away.

And for decades, thinking of Recoleta was to imagine literary cafés and elegant tea rooms; whereas the steakhouse, on the other hand, seemed to be the exclusive preserve of other corners of the city.

However, this perception has changed drastically over the last fifteen years, because the steak houses here compete head-to-head with the big names in Palermo and, indeed, have even managed to surpass the experience of the most acclaimed “temples”. So, without further ado, stick around to discover the best parrillas in Recoleta.

Five-star barbecue: the grills of the grand hotels

The Alvear Grill, the palace's grill room

For a true connoisseur, the historic Alvear Palace needs little introduction. This place has been a quintessential haven for royalty, presidents and even film stars.

What perhaps not many know is that within its spaces operates the Alvear Grill, a wood-fired steakhouse that has managed to maintain the elegance and standard of the hotel without falling into stiff sophistication.

As soon as you walk in, you notice the brazier with juicy cuts of meat roasting over the heat of quebracho and espinillo wood, while the immaculate waiters naturally explain the origin of each cut.

You must bear in mind that, if you like eating at the counter in front of the fire, it is best to arrive early, as reservations are not taken for that area. However, for tables you must do so by phone on +54 11 4808 2100.

Regarding the menu, you will see that it is not extensive, but it focuses on the most select and well-executed cuts, accompanied by the classic side dishes that do not seek to overshadow the true protagonist.

Personally, I think that the experience of eating a good sirloin steak in a French-style setting is a luxury that not many can afford. And if you are also staying at the hotel, you have the perfect life; you just take the lift, cross the threshold and you are already in steak paradise. So come and enjoy it.

Elena, the steakhouse that looks out to the world

Now, just a few blocks from the Alvear Palace, at 1086 Posadas Street (inside the Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires), is Elena, a steakhouse that features in 54th place in the prestigious ranking “World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants 2026”

Under the direction of executive chef Juan Gaffuri and chef Nicolás Díaz Rosáenz, their menu focuses on dry-aging techniques, letting the cuts rest for up to about 70 days in climate-controlled chambers before going to the grill.

The dining room looks magnificent, with its double-height ceiling, spectacular glass dome and fully open-plan kitchen. The venue’s name pays tribute to the aristocrat Elena Peña Unzué, who received the iconic mansion adjacent to this site as a wedding present in the early 20th century.

However, turning the historical page, we can mention that one of the favourite dishes here is the sirloin steak from Argentine Holstein-Friesian beef; and to accompany this, like all the cuts, the sommelier Dulce Long offers diners a wine list with more than 200 domestic labels which are renewed every six months.

Therefore, Elena is the safe choice for having both a business lunch and an unforgettable dinner. It is open every day from 07:00 to 11:00 (for breakfast); lunch starts from 12:30 to 15:30 and dinner runs from 19:00 to 00:00. Reservations can be made by phone via the number +54 11 4321 1200.

Steak houses with their own stamp: where fire has a signature

Fervor, the steakhouse that Hollywood already knows

About five blocks from the Recoleta cemetery, at 1519 Posadas Street, Fervor has been running since 2008. This project was the major venture of the brothers Alejo, Tomás and Martín Waisman. Alejo is the chef who, having recently arrived from France, decided to open a restaurant that combined the flavours of the countryside and the sea, right in the middle of the historic agrarian conflict of that same year.

Yet today this risky move has paid off, as the venue's popularity is such that it has become a favourite of Hollywood stars like Anya Taylor-Joy and even the Foo Fighters themselves when they visit Buenos Aires.

The atmosphere it evokes is that of that classic Buenos Aires bistro with black-and-white checkerboard floors, tables dressed with white tablecloths, red leather-upholstered armchairs, and professional waiters attired in aprons and waistcoats.

For its part, the meat looks radiant thanks to its traditional-style bone-in dry-ageing process. However, the most interesting part is the fish section, which deserves special attention, as this is bought directly from the quayside at the port of Mar del Plata, so freshness is the order of the day, successfully offering a varied menu that includes swordfish and blue cod.

Another detail worth noting is that the bread basket is homemade 100%, and on arrival you’re greeted with a complimentary glass of either sparkling wine or an Aperol Spritz. Once you’ve enjoyed that welcome drink, do order the provoleta with sun-dried tomatoes, rocket and red onion; I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s one of the best in the city.

If you want to plan a special moment, the Fervor restaurant is open every day for lunch from 12:00 to 16:00, and for dinner from Sunday to Thursday from 19:30 to 00:00, extending until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The telephone number for making reservations is +54 11 4804 4944.

Rufino, the well-kept underground secret

You have surely walked past 465 Quintana Street, and you wouldn't even dream that hidden in the basement of the refined Hotel Mío is a steakhouse that goes completely unnoticed. It's called Rufino, and it has long been on the radar of those passionate about mystery and who know how to eat well.

With chef Agustín Brañas at the helm, the menu gives centre stage to grilled meats and vegetables. This concept strikes a delicious balance between the essence of the classic and the contemporary twist that is evident in the presentation of each dish.

The venue has an intimate atmosphere, almost like a speakeasy, filled with dim lighting and a magnificent bar serving signature drinks that blends perfectly with the warmth of the embers.

If these details have piqued your curiosity about being in a quasi-clandestine steakhouse, Rufino is open from Sundays to Thursdays from 20:00 to 23:30; on Fridays and Saturdays it closes a bit later. For more information, call +54 11 6432 4264.

The classic route: no-fuss steak on Avenida Santa Fe

Aires Criollos, the Creole of Santa Fe and Callao

As you can see, not all asado in Recoleta spreads its smoke among the marble of five-star hotels or against walls with aristocratic touches. On Avenida Santa Fe are located some of the steakhouses that have managed to be a true lifesaver for both the lifelong local and the tourist who, after so much walking, needs to eat well and without too much fuss.

Located at number 1773, just a few metres from the junction with Avenida Callao, you’ll find the Aires Criollos restaurant, with its striking traditional style, featuring an abundance of wooden details, horse-themed decorations and a deliciously tempting barbecue that can be seen from the street.

The venue is open every day of the week, from 12:00 to 00:00. Its menu is extensive, but it guarantees good cuts of meat, some homemade pastas, grilled fish and typical local desserts. Although it is not avant-garde cuisine, the quality of the ingredients more than meets expectations.

Buenos Aires Grill, the shopping centre's wood-fired grill

If you move three blocks away from Aires Criollos, at number 1876 you will run into Buenos Aires Grill; a neighbourhood wood-fired parrilla that won't let you down, as much for the atmosphere as for the service you will receive.

It is open every day from 07:00 until 01:00. And its location is ideal for those who are out and about in the shopping area. It might not be the most sophisticated steakhouse around, but it is an absolute lifesaver when you are craving a good cut of meat without any fuss.

How to choose your barbecue according to the occasion

If you are in Recoleta for work and have to organise a business dinner, both Elena and the Alvear Grill are winning choices. Both operate within the premises of 5-star hotels, so you will be guaranteed impeccable service and a professional-quality wine list.

Instead, if you are travelling alone or with friends and are looking for a more relaxed experience, Fervor is the place to be, as it has a more vibrant energy accompanied by good music and a grill with seafood ingredients that are a delight.

Now, if the plan is to have a date or a romantic dinner, Rufino restaurant brings out that special advantage of being more tucked away, gifting you a more intimate evening with its subdued lighting and a super-private atmosphere.

Regarding the cuts, the sirloin steak remains the undisputed king in all the steakhouses in Recoleta. However, I suggest stepping out of your comfort zone and trying the skirt steak at Fervor, as well as the sweetbreads at Aires Criollos and the dry-aged ribeye at Elena. And if you go to the Alvear Grill, ask them to recommend the cut of the day, as the master griller always has an ace up his sleeve that you won't see on the printed menu.
