On the morning of 5 December 2017, a few hours after posting her last tweet, August was found dead by a resident in a park in Ventura County, California. Her death was ruled a suicide, due to "asphyxiation by hanging", according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner.

At the age of 23, the actress had left notes in a diary that authorities said contained "suicidal overtones", which may have stemmed from cyber-bullying and cyber-bullying in the hours before.
