The Chantecler Cabaret

El Chantecler was a cabaret that operated in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina in a building built for this purpose at 440 Paraná Street, a few meters from Corrientes Avenue, between December 1924 and 1960, the year it stopped working and was demolished. It was owned by the French citizen Charles According to and its attendance was nourished by artists, politicians, tourists and wealthy people who came to drink, eat, dance and witness the shows, in which those linked to tango prevailed.
It was inaugurated in December 1924 and during the 1930s it was also called “Vieux Paris” and its front was decorated with a mill and details of Montmartre.

The name of the site is taken from French, a language that was synonymous with culture among the intellectuals and the wealthy class of Buenos Aires at that time, and means "sing clear." The first known Chantecler in the Río de la Plata was a cabaret that had been operating since 1910 in Montevideo, owned by Emilio Matos, father of Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, which had initially been called “Moulin Rouge”, then “Campi” and, finally, until its closing, “Chanteclair”.

At the inauguration, the Julio de Caro orchestra performed, the best at the time, with him as violinist and conductor; his brothers Emilio (second violin) and Francisco on piano. Pedro Laurenz and Pedro Maffia played the bandoneons and Ruperto Thompson played the double bass. De Caro alternated on gala nights with a group led by a young Juan D'Arienzo, thus contrasting two absolutely different rhythms and styles: De Caro, who favored melody, and D'Arienzo, who was pure rhythm.

The Chantecler was demolished in 1960 after being inactive for some time. In homage to the cabaret, Juan Polito, Carlos Ángel Lazzari and Ángel Roque Gatti composed the tango Glorioso Chantecler and, when the place no longer worked, but the building still existed, Enrique Cadícamo wrote the lyrics and music of a tango dismissing him with the title of Goodbye Chantecler.
