The Chantecler Cabaret
The Chantecler was a cabaret that operated in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in a building built for that purpose on 440 Paraná Street, a few meters from Corrientes Avenue, between December 1924 and 1960, when it ceased to operate and was demolished. It was owned by the French citizen Charles Según and its attendance was nourished by artists, politicians, tourists and wealthy people who came to drink, eat, dance and watch the shows, which were mainly tango related.
It was inaugurated in December 1924 and during the 1930s it was also called "Vieux Paris" and its front was decorated with a mill and details of Montmartre.
The name of the place is taken from French, a language that was synonymous with culture among the intellectuals and the wealthy class of Buenos Aires at that time, and means "sing clear". The first known Chantecler in the Rio de la Plata was a cabaret that operated since 1910 in Montevideo, owned by Emilio Matos, father of Gerardo Matos Rodriguez, which was initially called "Moulin Rouge", then "Campi" and, finally until its closure, "Chanteclair".

At the opening the Julio de Caro's orchestra, the best at that time, played with him as violinist and conductor; his brothers Emilio (second violin) and Francisco on piano. On bandoneons were Pedro Laurenz and Pedro Maffia and on double bass Ruperto Thompson. De Caro alternated on gala evenings with an ensemble led by a young Juan D'Arienzo, thus contrasting two completely different rhythms and styles: De Caro, who privileged melody, and D'Arienzo, who was pure rhythm.
The Chantecler was demolished in 1960 after being inactive for some time. In homage to the cabaret, Juan Polito, Carlos Ángel Lazzari and Ángel Roque Gatti composed the tango Glorioso Chantecler and, when the local was no longer in operation, but the building still survived, Enrique Cadícamo wrote the lyrics and music of a tango bidding it farewell with the title Adiós Chantecler.
